Before the American Revolution, salons, coteries, and clubs operated as the principal arenas of literary communication in the sociable world of the colonies. Salons, also known as drawing rooms, were typically mixed sex gatherings superintended by a woman and designed to provide stimulating conversation and amusement. Coteries were informal networks of persons who shared an interest in aesthetic expression, usually under the direction of a central male figure. Clubs were typically all-male gatherings, convened with a stated program, and possessing laws and ceremonies.
