This volume, one of five collecting the complete stories of Henry James, presents in the approximate chronological order of their composition 24 stories that were first published in periodicals between 1864 and 1874. For 20 of the stories, the texts printed here are taken from the periodicals where they were first published. Thirteen of these stories were never collected in book form by James; the other seven appeared in later collections in substantially revised forms that reflect James at a different stage in his career. The remaining four stories, "A Passionate Pilgrim," "The Madonna of the Future," "The Last of the Valerii," and "Madame de Mauves," were published in book form during the period immediately following their composition. For these stories, the texts printed here are the book versions representing James's latest revisions during this period: the text of "A Passionate Pilgrim" is taken from A Passionate Pilgrim and Other Tales (Boston: James R. Osgood, 1875); the texts of "The Madonna of the Future," "The Last of the Valerii," and "Madame de Mauves" are taken from The Madonna of the Future and Other Tales (London: Macmillan, 1879).
The following list gives the first periodical and the first American and English book publications of the stories printed in this volume. (James later included three of the stories, "A Passionate Pilgrim," "The Madonna of the Future," and "Madame de Mauves," in the 1907-9 New York Edition of his collected works.)
