Brevoort

Powell often ate at the Brevoort, an ancient establishment located on East Ninth Street, between Fifth Avenue and University Place. In a diary entry of July 26, 1938, Powell wrote, "Louie, the old waiter at the Brevoort, was not his usual red, whiskey-burned self. So I said, 'What's the matter, Louie, you're so pale?' He shrugged. 'Ah,' he said bitterly, 'I been away on vacash!'"
